Michael Harry Shearer passed away on March 4, 2021 in Miranda, Calif. He was born on March 2, 1946 to Harry and Marilyn Shearer in Pasadena, Calif. Michael is survived by his four children; Jason Schmidt, Heather Shearer, Zeke Shearer, and Janesa Shearer. Michael was predeceased by his wife Sandra "Sandie" (Porter) Shearer in December 2010. Michael primarily grew up in Shingletown, Calif.Until joining the navy at age 17. He was stationed on the USS Buck and performed bravely as a Radioman during the Vietnam war.
After completing his military service, Michael studied at Costa Mesa College, where he excelled in all forms of studio art. He developed a special passion for glass blowing, which he turned into a lifelong career. Michael's art glass has been collected internationally since the opening of his first studio in Hermosa Beach, Calif. After meeting Sandie at an art show in 1977, the two were married in November 1983 and moved the studio to Laguna Niguel, Calif. There Michael showed his work at the Pageant of the Masters Art Show and the Museum of Art in Laguna Beach among other galleries. The family resided in Southern California until moving to Miranda in 1990. Together, they owned and operated Spirit Art Glass on the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt County. Michael's unique style embodied simplicity and elegance utilizing the natural qualities of glass. Michael continued to create art glass until his passing. Throughout his adult life, Michael championed causes for the less fortunate and persecuted peoples all over the world. He will be remembered as a remarkable artist and promoter of peaceful ideology.
