Chinese Cantonese Famille Rose Medallion, Rouleau-shaped antique table lamps. An incredible price (do search for "Famille Rose lamps" or "Rose Medallion lamps" on 1stDibs if you doubt) for pair of nearly mirror image antique Chinese porcelain vases converted to lamps. Overall height: 16 1/3 to the light bulb socket.
Rouleau is the term assigned by the French in the 18th century, the Chinese name for this shape is bang chui ping. Likely these vases were produced in Jingdezhen and sent to Canton for decoration and subsequently exported to the West. The vases feature the ubiquitous gilded ground enameled with pink roses, green leaves, a variety of butterflies and water lilies, various fruit and flowers of Rose Medallion. The necks feature pale green, orange, black and gilded lotus blossom-shaped panels with birds, butterflies and roses on one side and on the other a detail of Chinese figures in a a pavilion (different on each vase, see photos).
The large panels have two pink and two orange bats guarding the upper and lower corners of a garden rich with flowers, birds, bugs and butterflies a peach tree and a large rose bush in full bloom. On the reverse green dragons, whose tails curl around to form the panel and end just in front of the table in the foreground on one lamp and at garden edge on the other, protect domestic scenes decorated with tapestry on walls featuring lacquered tables, people playing games, a presentation to a seated man with either mountain scenes in the distance or pine, bamboo and banana trees seen through the'windows'. Sorry, brass fittings not gilt ormolu but auspiciously featuring lotus blossom and tortoises which in Chinese culture are a symbol of longevity, power and tenacity.
Or the price you can have them refitted to your taste and have the necessary restoration work done to the neck of the damaged one. Canton or Cantonese porcelain is the characteristic style of ceramic ware decorated in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong and prior to 1842, the sole legal port for export of Chinese goods to Europe. Typically, the export wares were made, glazed, and fired at Jingdezhen but decorated with enamels in Guangzhou, then known as Canton, for export to the West.
